Countdown With Confidence

Published on 25 April 2025 at 07:00

We were extremely impressed by the energy, dedication, and sheer brilliance of our tutees shown over the Easter holiday! Whether it was our Key Stage 3 learners getting a head start on GCSE texts or our Year 11s polishing their final exam skills, the work ethic was nothing short of inspiring. The 90-minute sessions proved hugely productive and we will definitely be keeping those in mind moving forward.

And now, the countdown is on. Just 17 days (at the time of writing) until the first AQA English Literature exam—our students are focused, prepared, and, dare we say it, ready to shine. We can already picture the calm, collected confidence they’ll carry into the exam hall.

🎓 How Your Grades Get to You: The Journey of a Result

Ever wondered what happens between finishing your last exam and opening that all-important envelope on results day?

Here’s the process:

  1. Marking – Once your paper is submitted, it’s scanned and sent to an examiner—usually a current or former English teacher—who follows strict mark schemes and standardisation training.
  2. Moderation – The exam board’s senior team reviews a sample of each examiner’s marking to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  3. Awarding – After all the scripts are marked, grade boundaries are set. These take into account national performance trends, paper difficulty, and statistical modelling to ensure fairness.
  4. Results Compiled – Final marks are turned into grades, printed, packaged securely, and sent directly to schools—ready to be handed to you on results day.

We’re confident that our tutees will be holding results they’re truly proud of!

🧠 Mental Health Corner: Think Like a Boxer

The day before a big exam should not be about intense cramming. Think of a professional boxer—no one is doing a full workout the night before a championship fight. Instead, they’re focused on staying loose, mentally sharp, and positive.

Scientific studies back this up: cortisol levels spike under stress, which can impair memory recall and analytical thinking. So instead of overloading your brain, try:

  • Light re-reading of key quotes or summaries
  • Talking through themes aloud
  • Visualising how you’ll approach each question calmly and confidently

A calm mind delivers knockout answers!

💬 Life Outside the Books

Bournemouth brought us… rain. But also, joy! Arlo was thrilled to meet penguins at the aquarium and may or may not have redecorated a pottery café with a bit too much creative flair. Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical was a stylish success—though sadly it hasn’t convinced Bradley to wear anything but his “marking hoodie.” Bradley’s excitement for the Benn vs Eubank Jr fight tomorrow is also building, and he is convinced that boxing is just like English: it's all about structure, timing, and landing the perfect punch(line).
