Keeping Momentum

Published on 16 May 2025 at 07:00

With the first English GCSE exam officially behind us, we want to say a huge well done to every one of our tutees who tackled the AQA English Literature Paper 1 last Monday. From all the feedback we’ve received, it seems like the question on ambition in Macbeth was a welcome challenge, and that exam technique was on point. That’s one ticked off the list—just three more to go—and if that’s how things have started, the rest is looking very promising!

🔄 Staying on Track Between Exams

The days between exams can feel strange; too much time to worry, not enough structure. That’s why it’s essential to keep the momentum going without burning out. Here are some scientifically backed do’s and don’ts:

✅ Do:

  • Follow a loose routine: Wake up and revise at roughly the same time each day.

  • Use the Pomodoro technique—25 minutes of work with a strict 5-minute break. It’s shown to improve focus and reduce fatigue.

  • Review what you know in the mornings, and tackle trickier areas later when your brain is fully alert.

🚫 Don’t:

  • Compare your revision timetable with friends. Individual needs vary.

  • Revise for 10 hours straight. The Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve tells us that spaced repetition is far more effective than cramming.

  • Ignore rest. Even elite athletes have rest days and your brain needs them too!

Keep the end goal in sight: every session counts, every mark matters and you can do this.

🌟 Life Outside the Books

Last Sunday was wall-to-wall tutoring, but seeing our students leave each session ready to crush Macbeth and Jekyll & Hyde made every minute worth it. We’re low on downtime, but Arlo is doing enough relaxing for all of us; he’s already counting down to seeing Paddington: The Musical, even though we aren't going until December! Bradley’s pleased to be going to the Arsenal game this weekend, though his optimism has been crushed more times than a Paper 2 Unseen Poetry question. And Jemma? Let’s just say she did not enjoy the second installment of Molly-Mae: Behind it All and has declared her disappointment to all who will listen.
